Contacting Mr. Jarvis

If you have a question about your work or would like to ask for help, here is how to get in touch with me outside of our class meeting or tiered support time!

The BEST Method for Students: Make a Google Classroom comment!

  • The FASTEST way to get an answer to a question you have about an assignment is to post a comment on the assignment on Google Classroom! If you have a question, someone else is probably wondering the same thing.
  • Your comment may be answered ASAP by me, or by another student.
The 2nd Best Method: Zoom with me during tiered support time or teacher office hours!

  • Talking is way more efficient than typing!
  • If you have a question, my Zoom Door will always be open to you. Jump into Zoom during our class’s tired support time, or email me to let me know you’d like to Zoom during my office hours.
Other Methods

  • Email me: ej*****@****sd.org. Contact me ANYTIME using this  email, and I will respond no later than the end of the following school day…most likely sooner.
  • Call me during office hours (2:30-3:30): 805-550-3497

Citizenship Accountability Plan

Citizenship accountability in this class is built around a Restorative Justice philosophy. Positive incentives exist to reward positive behavior. Negative consequences are necessary when rules are broken in ways that threaten or disrupt the productivity, integrity, or safety of our classroom.

Positive Incentives. Being an awesome human during class will result in:

  1. An “O” (outstanding) citizenship grade
  2. Earning paw pats for quarterly and end of the year raffles!
  3. A positive postcard, email, or call home to families.
Negative Consequences. Violating behavior expectations will result in the following:

  1. Fill out a Think Sheet – Meet during office hours for restoration.
  2. If negative or disruptive behaviors persist:
    1. An RA Log and counselor referral will be made, communicating the issue to administration.
    2. A call will be made to parents or guardians, informing them of the problem, and an  unsatisfactory citizenship grade documented on your report card.

Course Information

What is Humanities?

  • Basically, “Humanities” is the integration of English-language arts and social studies.  This course will cover the Common Core State Standards for English/Language Arts, Literacy in History/ Social Studies, as well as the California State Social Studies Standards.  Social studies topics will focus on world history and early civilizations. Topics will include the following units of study: Early Man; Mesopotamia, Egypt and Kush; Civilization in India and China; The Foundations of Western Ideas (Hebrews, Ancient Greece); The Roman World.   Novels studied will include  A Long Walk to Water, Maroo of the Winter Caves, and Peak.  We will also be reading numerous smaller selections from larger sources.  Students will also be expected to self-select independent reading material to be completed throughout the school year.
Independent Reading

  • We are all expected to have an independent reading book by the second week of school, and we are all going to be reading for an average of thirty minutes each night.  When we finish a book, we take a quick “Reading Counts” quiz on the novel and quickly begin a new book…we are ALWAYS reading.
  • Approximately every five weeks, we will complete a book project/report on one of the books completed within that time frame.   So, at least ONE book MUST be completed by each book project/report due date.  Reading more than one is encouraged, but we ONLY need to complete ONE book project/report by the following due dates:  Wednesday, October 1st; Thursday, November 5th; and Thursday, December 17th.  The exact format of each project/report will be provided shortly and will in most cases differ for each assigned project/report.  Additional due dates will be posted after Winter Break.
Writing

  • Narrative – Personal experiences and imaginative stories.
  • Explanatory/Informational – Research papers, summaries, responses to literature, and technical writing (e.g., directions)
  • Argumentative – Making a “CLAIM” and defending it with “EVIDENCE”;  opinion piece; reviews; opinion pieces; and debates.

Let’s have a GREAT year TOGETHER!
